Every spring, commercial drivers nationwide brace for one of the most intense safety inspection campaigns of the year — the CVSA International Roadcheck, also known in the industry as the DOT Safety Blitz. This year, the blitz will take place from May 13 to May 15, 2025, and enforcement officers across North America will be on high alert.

But don’t panic — prepare.

🚛 What Is the DOT Safety Blitz?

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts this annual event in partnership with FMCSA, state troopers, and local enforcement agencies. During the three-day period, thousands of Level I inspections will be conducted on commercial motor vehicles across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The goal? To ensure drivers and carriers comply with all federal safety regulations — and to remove unsafe vehicles and drivers from the road immediately.

🎯 2025 Focus Area: Driver Qualifications & Vehicle Mechanical Fitness

Each year, the CVSA highlights a specific focus area for extra attention. In 2025, inspectors will place special emphasis on:

  • Driver Qualification Files

  • Licensing and Endorsements

  • Medical Certificates

  • Record of Duty Status (HOS Compliance)

  • False Logs, Ghost Drivers & ELD Tampering

  • Brake System Violations

  • Tire Tread Depth and Air Pressure

Fleets should also be aware that foreign CDL holders, especially those from Canada and Mexico, will be under closer scrutiny as part of increased cross-border safety cooperation.

🧠 What Should Drivers Expect?

A Level I Inspection — the most thorough — typically includes:

  • Review of driver documents (CDL, medical card, logbook/ELD)

  • Visual inspection of critical vehicle systems (brakes, tires, lights, steering, suspension)

  • Questions to verify English proficiency (if applicable)

  • Drug/alcohol indicators

  • Seatbelt and safety equipment checks

  • Cargo securement review

Violations can result in Out-of-Service Orders, immediate penalties, or compliance flags on your carrier profile.

✅ How to Prepare

Carriers and drivers can avoid violations by following a few simple steps:

  • Double-check driver files and make sure all medical cards, CDLs, and endorsements are up-to-date.

  • Ensure ELDs are functioning and hours of service logs are accurate.

  • Do a full pre-trip inspection — pay special attention to brakes, tires, and lights.

  • Remove any prohibited modifications, such as tampered ELD devices or bypass systems.

  • Train your drivers on inspection etiquette: stay calm, respectful, and professional.
