The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has officially announced the dates for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, scheduled for July 13–19, 2025. Throughout this designated safety blitz, law enforcement officers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico will intensify their enforcement efforts targeting dangerous driving behaviors among both commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle operators.

2025 Safety Focus: Reckless, Careless, and Dangerous Driving

The CVSA has declared that the central theme of this year’s initiative will be reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. These behaviors include any actions that exhibit a blatant disregard for the safety of others on the road. Specifically:

  • Reckless driving refers to operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for safety.

  • Careless or dangerous driving is defined as driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for others.

Behaviors under scrutiny include excessive speeding, aggressive lane changes, distracted driving (such as texting), failure to wear seat belts, impaired driving, and other conduct that places lives at risk.

What to Expect During Operation Safe Driver Week

During the weeklong campaign, police and commercial vehicle enforcement personnel will be stationed on highways, interstates, and local roads to monitor driver behavior. Drivers caught violating traffic laws may be stopped and issued either a warning or a citation/ticket. The initiative aims not just to penalize but also to educate and promote safer driving habits.

In addition to enforcement efforts, driver education programs will be conducted to help both professional drivers and the general public understand the consequences of unsafe driving and the importance of operating vehicles responsibly.

Results from 2024 Operation Safe Driver Week

Last year’s enforcement outcomes highlight the ongoing need for such initiatives. During the 2024 Operation Safe Driver Week:

  • 2,439 warnings and 1,583 citations were issued to CMV drivers.

  • 1,694 warnings and 1,226 citations were issued specifically for speeding.

  • 354 warnings and 554 tickets were related to seat belt violations.

  • 158 warnings and 169 citations addressed distracted driving, such as texting or using mobile devices.

  • 30 warnings and 49 citations were issued for drug or alcohol-related offenses.

These statistics reveal that despite ongoing enforcement and education, a significant number of drivers continue to engage in risky behaviors that compromise road safety.

Why It Matters

Operation Safe Driver Week is more than a crackdown—it’s a public safety movement designed to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks, buses, and passenger vehicles. Unsafe driving habits are among the top causes of roadway fatalities. This coordinated effort among international law enforcement agencies reflects the commitment to creating safer highways for all.

The CVSA, along with its partners, urges all drivers—whether behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound semi or a compact car—to slow down, stay alert, buckle up, and drive sober.

CellEx Consulting Group encourages all motor carriers and drivers to prepare early, refresh safety protocols, and use this week as an opportunity for retraining and compliance reinforcement.
